Mental Exercise

Is your brain getting it's daily dose of vitamins?

While I have read a lot over the years (high school, college, work related schools and seminars), of lately I have let my brain be filled more with the media enterprise than any other medium. I am having a harder time concentrating and keeping my thoughts on one idea. I have become overloaded with images and a cacophony of sounds. My 'brain', my mental ability, is paying for that neglect.

So I decided just a couple of days ago to spend more time reading and in research to strengthen by mental agility. I love to read and when a good book comes along I can faithfully lose myself in the story. Other than novels, though, I have decided to begin with the classics, of which I have spent very little time. I found a web site (100 Must-Read Books: The Essential Man's Library) that promotes the books that the web site author feels most men should read, and which is mostly of the classic editions. I ordered the first one on the list, The Great Gatsby, and in the near future will give you a rundown of it's contents.
Besides the classics I will also spend more time in the Bible. While I often read different passages, I rarely spend any more than just a few minutes contemplating the relevance. If you remember from my first post, our Spiritual Well-Being is just as important as the other two (Mental and Physical).

So what is the purpose of all this reading and study?
In order for an individual to have great success in their lives, they must attend to PMS (Physical, Mental, and Spiritual) Well-being. I have chosen reading and study, but there a number of ways you can keep your mind sharp. Whatever you choose, choose that which requires your mind to think and problem solve. While a movie or novel is good for relaxation, it does very little in promoting Mental Exercise.

Super Foods

In this day of fast food and fast lives, many do not get the proper nutrition they need to sustain daily activities.

Fast food (typically that which is purchased at fast food restaurants and in the microwave section of the frozen food department) is just that - fast food, with little or no value for the cells in your body. If may appease the palate or fill the stomach, but it is really of little use much more than that. In fact it is more harmful to your body than good.
A fast lifestyle, working long hours and driving long distances to make ends meet, depletes the body of energy stores and valuable minerals and vitamins.
Proper nutrition is essential to sustaining healthy blood cells and metabolic rates in the body. To supplement your nutritional needs on a daily basis I recommend taking what is called a "super food."
What is a "super food?" A super food is a dietary supplement, either in powder or drink form, that offers most of the essential vitamins and micro nutrients that a body needs on a daily basis. I take two on a daily basis.

The first is Emerald Balance, manufactured by 'sgnnutrition'. Emerald Balance gives me the equivalent of 10-12 servings of vegetables per day. Emerald Balance can be bought at many local health food stores and on the internet, such as Amazon.com. I by mine at Bodybuilding.com.

Another "super food" that is essential for daily intake is Monavie. Like Emerald Balance it gives me the equivalent of 8-12 servings of fruits, in 2-4 ounces of drink. Monavie is a powerful drink loaded with antioxidants and micro nutrients. It comes in 3 blends; Original (supports immune system), Active (supports an active lifestyle), and Pulse (supports heart health). Monavie can only be purchased from independent distributors. I buy mine at Thegreatproduct.com.

While there is much more that can be said about nutrition, adding a "super food" to your daily diet will go a long way in supporting a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

The Ageless Squat

One of the greatest difficulties that seniors face (men and women alike) is getting up once they sit down.

Without proper conditioning the muscles in the back of our thighs (hamstrings for short) and on the front of our thighs (quads for short) as well as our butt muscles (glutes for short) become weak and soft.
To overcome this malady, it is essential, regardless of your age or condition, to begin strengthening these areas doing squats. You may not be able use weights, nor do them without hanging on to a chair. You may not even be able to do them fully - squatting down until your thighs break parallel with the ground or floor. But you must do them.
Yes, they are hard. Yes, sometimes you don't think you are able. Yes, sometimes you feel you can't get back up. But you still must do them.
As you get stronger, I would suggest, even if it is 'air squats' (without any weight) that you begin a routine of 1 set of 20 repetitions. Do these twice a week three or four days apart. This is a very dynamic exercise routine and will build great strength and endurance to your whole body.

Do not let age control your life. You cannot stop the aging process, but you also do not have to give into it.
Take charge of your health and give yourself an edge as you advance in years.

A Healthy Balance

What does it take to stay physically active and well?
Apart from circumstances beyond our control such as a major disease, illness, or accident, it is actually quite simple.
  • Eat in moderation
  • Eat the right food
  • Exercise everyday
  • Listen to your body
Imagine, just thirteen words is all you have to know. Follow their advice and live a productive and healthy life. Do not, fail to 'seize the day,' and watch your health and body deteriorate on a daily basis.

Over the next few posts, I will expound some more on these simple words, as well as give some insight into why I am asking "Who's in Charge?"

Rules of the Game

I just got back from one of my favorite things to do to work on my 'Physical" Well Being, and thought I would share with you the outline for future discussions.
Since we are talking about PMS, let's break it down ...

Physical Well Being
  • A Healthy Balance
  1. Nutrition
  2. Exercise
  3. Heart Rate
  4. Doctor Who?
  5. Current Issues
  • A Secure Environment
  1. Personal
  2. Family
  3. Defense
  4. Offense
Mental Well Being
  • GIGO
  • Book Worm
  • Positive vs. Negative
  • Personal Challenges
Spiritual Well Being
  • A Holy Relationship
  • The Ultimate Guide
  • Meditation
  • O' Marilla, How Much You Miss!
As you can see, I take a rather 'holistic' approach to life. My hope is after we have delved into each of these subjects, you will be able to take 'charge' of your own life and personal surroundings.
